Social Responsibility and Sustainability

FERNANDO DEICAS

Presidente de Bodega

From the very beginning, a dream has guided our journey: to innovate and achieve international recognition for Uruguay’s wine industry, proving that great wines can indeed be made in our country.

Every bottle we produce reflects not only the quality of our industry, but also the passion and dedication of those who work with love for what they do. An exceptional wine goes beyond what is perceived on the palate—it is a story: one that connects, transforms, and leaves a lasting mark. A story that inspires us to care for nature, to strengthen our communities, and to imagine a more sustainable future. True greatness lies not only in the vineyard, but in the impact we leave on the world.

Today, we remain committed to building the story of Uruguayan wine while leaving the smallest possible footprint on the environment. We strive to integrate sustainability into every stage of our process.

Our Carbon Footprint

We actively work on measuring, reducing, and offsetting our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

  • Comprehensive Measurement: We follow the guidelines of the GHG Protocol to classify our emissions:
    • Scope 1: Direct emissions from our operations.
    • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from energy consumption.
    • Scope 3: Emissions generated throughout the value chain.
  • Reduction and Offsetting:
    • Energy efficiency through LED lighting and optimized machinery.
    • Fuel consumption control and efficiency via fleet renewal of tractors.
    • Certified reforestation projects.

Results: Our carbon footprint is approximately 3 kg of CO₂ equivalent per bottle of wine produced.

Our Water Footprint

For over a decade, we have responsibly managed our water usage, successfully reducing consumption from 7 liters to 2.9 liters of water per liter of wine produced (excluding irrigation).

  • A Dual Commitment:
    • We ensure sufficient water use to maintain cleanliness and enological quality.
    • We optimize irrigation systems and promote the care of this essential resource.

We continue to implement innovative technologies to further minimize our water footprint.

Wetland Treatment Plant

Our plant, renovated in 2021, manages industrial effluents through advanced processes that operate in harmony with the environment:

  • Separation and Neutralization: Acidic and alkaline effluents are treated to balance their chemical composition.
  • Activated Sludge and Wetlands: Aerobic treatment is followed by natural purification using plants such as papyrus, cattails, and calla lilies.

The treated water complies with national discharge regulations, ensuring sustainability and environmental safety, and is primarily used for irrigation.

Sustainable Vineyards

All grapes grown in our vineyards follow certified sustainable protocols.

  • Low-Impact Farming:  Limited use of agrochemicals and proper management of agricultural effluents.
  • Ecological Corridors: We rely on natural predators for pest control, helping preserve biodiversity.
  • Water Conservation and Soil Fertility:  Efficient irrigation systems and regenerative practices ensure soil health.

Our sustainable vineyards reflect our commitment to the planet and our pursuit of the highest quality while caring for the natural environment.
